New Zealand Music Month: Diocletian

**It’s New Zealand Music Month this May. **New Zealand’s **annual celebration of homegrown music. Generally, that involves a lot of mainstream media highlighting a lot of mainstream acts. So I’m here to try and redress the balance a bit. **I’ll be posting a link to some rowdy New Zealand music for you to check out every day over the next month. Some bands will no doubt be familiar; others I hope will be fresh to your ears.

Diocletian

There’s no real need to introduce death metal band Diocletian. Obviously, the Doom Cult titan already has devoted fans in all corners of the globe. Still, it’s always worth pointing out that Diocletian’s sound and aesthetic perfectly stress and represent the totality and brutality of conflict. The band’s militant stance has always underscored that the universe is defined by ceaseless battles between opposing forces, and Diocletian’s always backed that up with overwhelming assaults of sonic barbarity.

UPDATE: On 28 May Diocletian posted the following message on the band’s Facebook page: “To new and old fans alike, its the end of an era for Diocletian, we cease to exist from this day on. 2004-2015ce”.
